Tejas Karia is a Partner with the Dispute Resolution Practice at Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas and also heads the Firm’s Arbitration Practice.

His expertise spans across international and domestic commercial arbitrations, corporate & securities litigations, general corporate advisory and diverse aspects under the information technology law including data privacy and confidentiality.

Tejas has extensive experience handling a broad range of complex, high-value international and domestic commercial disputes and frequently advises clients across diverse industry sectors including oil and gas, real estate, construction and private equity, amongst others. He has represented clients in arbitrations before the LCIA, ICC, ICADR, ICA and SIAC, as well as the Supreme Court of India and various High Courts.

His well-regarded contribution to policy formulation across the arbitration domain endows Tejas with a deep understanding of issues that enables him to present solutions that deliver effective resolutions for his clients. Tejas has advised on the drafting of amendments to a number of key Acts including the Indian Arbitration and Conciliation Act 1996 and the Commercial Courts, Commercial Division and Commercial Appellate Division of High Courts Bill, 2015. He has also been a part of the high-powered committee set up by the Government of India for institutionalisation of arbitration in India.

Tejas is also frequently sought by clients for his expertise on aspects of Information Technology Law relating to data protection, privacy and confidentiality. He has advised the National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM) for drafting amendments to the Indian Information Technology Act, 2000 addressing data protection provisions.

At the forefront of legal issues, Tejas is a part of leading arbitration domain platforms, has contributed to numerous publications and is frequently sought after to speak at arbitration and IT industry events. He was recently appointed a member of the drafting committee of AFSA International Arbitration Rules by the Arbitration Foundation of Southern Africa. He is a member of both the Singapore International Arbitration Centre’s (SIAC) Court of Arbitration and the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR. Tejas is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, London, apart from being the Vice-Chairman for the Society of Construction Law in India. Tejas is also part of E-Commerce, Privacy, Technology and Outsourcing Leadership Practice Group of Lex Mundi.

A prolific author, Tejas frequently writes for domain specific publications. He is a part of the editorial board of the “Digital Evidence and Electronic Signatures Law Review”, a quarterly journal from the UK that focusses on issues relating to electronic signature and digital evidence. He is a co-author of the chapter on “India” in two books – “Digital Evidence”, 3rd Edition (2012) published by Lexis Nexis Butterworth and ‘Electronic Evidence’, published by LexisNexis, Butterworths.

Tejas has authored/co-authored a number of publications including a chapter on India in “Arbitration World”, 6th Edition (2018) published by Sweet & Maxwell and “Enforcing Arbitral Awards in India”, 1st Edition (2017) published by LexisNexis and “Alternate Dispute Resolution”, 1st Edition (2018) by Oxford University Press.

Tejas’ academic credentials include an LLM from the University of Gujarat and The London School of Economics, UK, and LLB from the ILS Law College, University of Pune. He is a practicing advocate in India and solicitor in England and Wales (non-practicing).
