Two veteran healthcare regulatory attorneys have joined Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP in Georgia. Edgar Bueno joins as a partner, while Matthew Wilmot joins as of counsel. They both join from Morris, Manning & Martin LLP, where Bueno was a partner and Wilmot was an associate.

Bueno has more than 20 years of experience defending clients under investigation by the government. A former assistant U.S. Attorney and chief of the Civil Division for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Georgia, he now focuses his practice on civil, criminal, and administrative matters involving healthcare fraud and abuse. He has extensive experience in defending actions brought under the federal False Claims Act (FCA) and similar state laws. He assists healthcare clients with internal investigations and compliance reviews to identify risk areas in operations or in billing. He counsels clients on business arrangements for compliance with the Anti-Kickback Statue and the Stark Self-Referral Law. Bueno also has experience in advising clients on HIPAA privacy and handling investigations involving medical record breaches.

Wilmot represents healthcare organizations and providers of all types. He counsels clients on regulatory and compliance issues, including institutional compliance, fraud and abuse, HIPAA, and the Anti-Kickback Statute and Stark Self-Referral Law. He also provides general counsel services to healthcare clients, including handling day-to-day legal matters, contracting, and corporate governance. His regulatory compliance practice focuses on white collar litigation, including government and internal investigations for clients in highly regulated industries such as healthcare, finance, and education. He represents clients in defending actions under the federal False Claims Act and similar state statutes. Wilmot also has extensive experience conducting internal investigations, compliance reviews, and risk analysis to assist clients both on responding to government inquiries as well as acting pro-actively to improve their operations.

“We’re excited to welcome Edgar and Matt to the firm,” said Gabriel Imperato, a leader of the Healthcare Enforcement, Compliance, and Litigation Team. “Their wide range of experience in the healthcare industry will be a great asset to the team and our clients. Edgar was an attorney at Broad and Cassel before the merger with Nelson Mullins and worked with many of us. We kept in touch over the years and also worked on different client matters and now we will be able to work together at the same firm, which only further improves our considerable experience and resources for this type of work.”

Nelson Mullins’ Healthcare Team provides legal representation attuned to the sensitive nature and intensity of oversight involved in healthcare transactions, claims, and regulatory matters. The firm guides clients on clinical trials, data security/patient privacy, electronic health information, patient care and operational issues, healthcare reimbursement, and telemedicine.
