Sanctioned law guaranteeing the free supply of medical cannabis in São Paulo

Last Tuesday (31), the law ( Law n° 17.618/23 ) was sanctioned, which authorizes the free distribution of cannabidiol-based medicines in the public health network of the state of São Paulo – that is, by health units public state and private affiliated to the Unified Health System (SUS). The text of the project had been approved by the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo (Alesp) on December 21, 2022, and had the support of more than 40,000 people through an online petition, as well as the Brazilian Bar Association of the state (OAB-SP) by means of a letter.

With the sanction, a working group will be created until March 2nd, aimed at regulating the new law, which will be made up of “technicians and representatives of non-profit associations supporting and researching (about) cannabis and associations representatives of patients” (Article 5, Sole Paragraph, of the law in question). The commission will define rules for…
