Introduction

Developments in the past year confirm that Sweden remains an arbitration-friendly jurisdiction. Arbitration is a favoured means of dispute resolution for many Swedish businesses and while Stockholm is not as frequently selected as an arbitral seat as London, Paris, New York or Washington DC, it is not uncommon for parties in international commerce to seat arbitrations in Sweden and select Swedish law as the lex arbitri.

The Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce (SCC) continues to attract international arbitrations to the jurisdiction and has expanded its offering with a new dispute settlement option that has gained some recognition as an innovative development.2 Recent examples of court practice related to arbitration, discussed in this overview, further confirm that Swedish courts are amenable to assist with, for example, collecting evidence from reluctant witnesses and executing arbitral awards, thus ensuring the effectiveness of arbitral procedures.
