Argentina ratifies Convention 108+ for the protection of personal data

The Argentine Congress approved the  Agreement 108+ for the Protection of Personal Data, which modifies the  Agreement for the Protection of Persons with respect to the Automated Treatment of Personal Data No. 108 .

The 108+ Convention had been signed by Argentina in 2019, but its ratification by the Legislative Power was pending.

What is Convention 108?

Convention No. 108 is an international treaty adopted in 1981, within the Council of Europe, under the premise that the general protection of personal data would only be effective if established by binding international standards. To date, it continues to be the only binding international instrument on this matter. According to its art. 23, the Convention is open for accession by non-member States of the Council of Europe. Uruguay was the first non-European country to adhere to the Agreement in August 2013. In the region, Mexico has also done so in 2018 and Argentina in 2019.
