We’re living through a time of profound change. We’ve perhaps become more aware of evolving developments around us and of the importance of being an active player for positive change in society, in our communities, and in our own lives. In recognition of this, and in alignment with a pillar of our 2022‒2025 Strategic Plan to Build a Better Society Through Brands, we’ve created “Stories of Change,” a feature article series that brings perspective to change in the global IP community. A profound question is percolating through law rms around the globe: Should we require our lawyers to work in person, and if so, how often? Many associates and partners are pushing back on in-person requirements, so rm leaders are unsure how to balance exibility and freedom for their lawyers against the risk of losing a rm’s culture. Are law rms at war over their very culture or are we just evolving?

Before March 2020, almost all lawyers worked nearly every business day in an ofce, only occasionally working from home or after hours. But in the blink of an eye—with the arrival of the pandemic—much of the world, including lawyers, began working remotely full time.
