Real-Time Blocking of Illegal Online Sports Broadcasts

In recent years, with the growth and massification of the Internet, various streaming platforms have emerged that offer access to live sports broadcasts, whether football, tennis, basketball, rugby or any other discipline. Many times, these platforms buy the rights for their transmission, but many times, they steal the signals and transmit them illegally.

Having noticed the situation, in recent days the Executive Branch regulated a controversial article of the Accountability Law linked to this problem. With the new regulations, the Communications Services Regulatory Unit (URSEC) will be able to request internet access providers (ISPs) to disable in real time access to illegal transmissions of live online sporting events. To do this, the holders of the rights to the transmissions must be registered with URSEC and present a well-founded request, in the form of a sworn declaration, proving ownership and the period for which they have the transmission rights for sporting events.
